Technology in the BNW
The quote above shows a few ways technology is used in the World State. It makes the life of the member (of the state) predecided and gives them no choice on who they will be. It also makes it easier to make more beings in a more efficient and faster way. In the novel, Brave New World, Huxley addresses a key issue. Overpopulation. He makes it clear that stability makes for a good life. What is technology used for then? In the book, The World State utilizes it's technology and mass production to ultimately control their people and create a "happy" society. This is accomplished this through systems like the Bokonoskvy Process and conditioning. Technology in the Brave New world is used to take advantage of every situation. The Controllers condition the people with specific ideals and give them their identity. The people are ultimately conditioned to be content with their place in an enslaved society as a result of the technology usage.

TODAYTechnology provides for multiple purposes in today's society. It is not solely used for "control". The main purpose of technology, however, is speed. We have smart phones, computers, and email to access information in a more effective way. It allows us to get to our destinations sooner, obtain our needs more quickly. In the article, The Purpose of technology, the author states, "In general, when technology attempts to solve problems of matter, energy, space, or time, it is successful. For example, the Internet handled a great problem of space—it allowed us to communicate with anybody in the world, instantly." With current technology, people go about their busy, stressful lives but are able to remain informed through social media.
However, today, technology is not only used to entertain and keep needs met, but is also used to improves oneself. Like the Brave New World utilizes a major conditioning process, we are beginning to use science and technology to get rid of unwanted genes. Eugenics is the idea that only desired traits should be passed down from generation to generation. The concept of eugenics has been around for much of history. However, now it has started to become a reality as geneticists explore ways to modify DNA to get rid of defects and diseases and engineer organism for our own purposes. |
