The Big Ben is a famous historical landmark in London. Many people refer the Big Ben as the clock tower although it is really the name of the Bell tower on the inside. The clock tower is a universal symbol of London's history and past. It rings every 15 minutes can be heard five miles within it's radius. Westminster Abbey The Westminster Abbey is a sacred place of hope and peace. It was founded in 960 and has been an importance ever since. It is a church that buried 17 monarchs along with many other significant figures in history. After thousands of years saint Angelo-Saxon is still held at the center of the Church. The Abbey is a place with God, beautiful paintings and antiques that shall last forever. Houses of Parliament Parliament is the United Kingdoms form of Government. It is made up of a couple of different house to carry out different roles and check on each other. UK parliament can make or change laws, check on government spending, and debate about important issues. Fleet Street
Fleet Street is a famous street of news buildings in London. It is named after the river fleet that passes through to one end of the street. Since 1702 it has become the hub of all England News. It is has grown into a major Newspaper distribution for all huge companies. "Even today, the street is called the spiritual home of British journalism"("What is Fleet Street...). |
Brave New WorldBig Henry
Big Henry is the identical version of the Big Ben in Brave New World. It keeps the similar name for people to understand its originality. Big Henry is located right out the Singery reason for its name being the Singery clock. It overall plays the same purpose as the Big Ben by always chiming the time for everyone to know. This keeps the society on time and accountable. The Abbey The Abbey in Brave New World provides an entire different atmosphere than the real one. It is actually the opposite of a time of peace, quite, and sanctuary with God. Instead it is a center of those intoxicated with Soma can come listen to music and be aroused. It is a place for couples to meet up and fill their desires. It is a place where people can fill themselves with false happiness. Parliament(Solidarity Services)
Once again the role of in Brave new world is completely different from its initial purpose. Parliament in the book is referred to the solidarity services. An area for those to fix their sexual desired by consuming Soma and chanting. It can be known as the home of the orgy porgy/free for all. Huxley puts such an immoral action in such a historical place is sicking. Although he wants to show the way society is turning and how we are progressing from tradition it is something we don't want to read. Fleet Street (Propaganda) Fleet street is used for the same purpose in Brave New World as it does in London today. It is hub for news to be processed, made, and than sent out for everyone to see. It is marketing system used for propaganda. That is how it is used in both worlds. "The various Bureaux of Propaganda...were housed in a single sixty-story building in Fleet Street"(Huxley 70). Fleet street is the hub of Newspapers and now is the hub of Brave New Worlds propaganda. Both are ways to influence society and controlling them to believe what they want. |
